Itineraries

The Markha Valley Trek in Ladakh is a renowned Himalayan adventure that combines dramatic landscapes, high-altitude challenges, and rich cultural experiences.

Duration: 8 Days | Grade: Moderate to Challenging | Max Altitude: 5,260m (Kongmaru La)

After driving along the scenic Zanskar River to Chilling, you cross a bridge or pulley trolley and begin your trek. The trail follows the Markha River, passing small settlements and dramatic gorges. Camp or stay at a homestay in the quiet village of Sara.

A long but rewarding day through willow groves, barley fields, and chortens. You pass the beautiful village of Chalak before reaching Markha, the largest village in the valley. The traditional houses and monastery here offer a glimpse of Ladakhi culture.

The trail gently climbs as you cross wooden bridges and prayer walls. You’ll see ancient ruins and the towering peak of Kang Yatse in the distance. Hankar is a small, peaceful village with a few homes and a perfect place to rest.

Today’s trail is more remote and rugged, with fewer signs of habitation. You gain significant altitude as you enter a wide pastureland called Nimaling, nestled below the mighty Kang Yatse. Expect cold winds and breathtaking views.

The most challenging day as you ascend to Kongmaru La Pass (5,260 m), the highest point of the trek. From the top, enjoy panoramic views of Ladakh and Zanskar ranges. The steep descent leads you to Chokdo village in the Shang Valley.

A short and easy final trek through a green valley with bubbling streams and colorful rock formations. From Shang Sumdo, you’ll be picked up and driven back to Leh, completing your Markha Valley adventure.
